Eugene Field letters and poem, 1886-1893.

The collection consists of four items, three letters and a poem. The letters include: to Miss Bisland, 30 May 1886, providing a letter of introduction to the Stoddards; to Miss Bisland, 4 Aug. 1886, introducing Mrs. Robert B. Peattie, and asking that she introduce her to the Stoddards and other literary folk in New York; to Mr. Stedman, 5 Jan. 1893, to introduce Miss Mary E. Squire, an acquaintance with mutual interests currently working on a children's book. Also, signed manuscript of Field's poem, A Paraphrase of Heine, with annotations, including, "copy for printer."

Eugene Field, an American writer, was born in 1850 to Rosewell Field and Frances Reed. After his mother's death in 1856, he and his brother were sent to live with a cousin in Amherst, Massachusetts. He studied at Williams College from 1868-69. He then studied for a short time at Knox College in Illinois and at the University of Missouri. He married Julia Sutherland Comstock on October 16, 1873.
